Summary

Description
English: Célestin Thys, last prince-abbot of Stavelot-Malmédy (1787-1794, died 1796). Painter unknown.
Following popular unrest in Stavelot in the aftermath of the Revolution in France, he abolished feudal rights in 1789 but reneged on his concessions and set up a tribunal to prosecute revolutionaries in 1793 when the Austrian armies momentarily gained the upper hand. He fled Stavelot when the French invaded later that year and the twin abbeys were abolished.
